Imprisonment

Pope Clement XI, for example, in 1703 wrote an inscription in the prison in San Michele, Italy that indicates the intended goal of imprisonment, parum est coerce improbos poeono, hisi bonos efficias diciplina. It means "there will be no benefit for putting the wicked in the prison if it does not educate them to become good people and teach them good lessons."
