The Da Vinci Code Seminar Report

There was a seminar about The Da Vinci Code last Saturday (ini sudah salah. seminarnya hari Jumat). The seminar was held in our school’s hall. The seminar was started right about 9 am that morning. The seminar was opened by Bang Martin. Then Ms. Sylvana Ranti-Apituley was the one who spoke to explain why the seminar was held. She said that the seminar was held because the appearance of The Da Vinci Code movie. The novel has been distributed in Indonesia since 2 years ago, but she said that Indonesian reader seldom read that book because it’s thickness. So, the widespread of The Da Vinci Code and it’s controversy is easier and greater by the movie, even the one who has read the novel said that the movie is as good as it’s novel.

The moderator of the seminar was Mr.Trisno Sutanto. His face just looks like Mr.Rasid Rahman, our Liturgika lecturer. He then introduced the speakers of the seminar. They are Romo Mardi Atmaja, Rainy Hutabarat, and Dr.Ioanes Rakhmat. Romo Atmaja was appointed to represent the Catholics view, but Romo said that he didn’t want to represent the Catholics. He was just represents himself. Rainy Hutabarat represents the feminist view, and Dr.Ioanes Rakhmat represents the New Testament view.

In Romo’s view, TDVC is just a novel. It’s a belief, but it is not a faith expression. He also said that it doesn’t need to have an emotional reaction to TDVC, because the Catholics never respond TDVC seriously, but the Opus Dei. He also said if you want to take it seriously, it’s up to you.

In Hutabarat’s view, the novel TDVC was not written in the feminist view. The novel just tells about the sensitive thing in Christianity history and also the exclusion of the woman in the church history.

In Ioanes Rakhmat’s view, there is a lot of mistakes that Dan Brown, the author of TDVC, using the source. The mistake that the author made is about the interpretation of Gospel of Maria. The author also made mistake in the church history. Dan Brown said that Jesus was said as God was decided in a convention, but the truth is the faith stance about Jesus was established since the first century.

For me the seminar is a kind of enlighten for my mind. I’m not read the novel neither watch the movie yet. So, the seminar is useful for me if sometime I’ll read the book.

The seminar ends at about 12 o’clock.
