This note is made under the 'saung' in my school. I am sitting here by myself to keep Andre's laptop while he is going to Rumah Sakit Persahabatan to arrange the transfer for his father's treatment that had an accident last night. Why do I have to sit here? It's because the bad signal reception of my modem in the library.
So, what's this note about? I guess I want to write a note about today's public lecture that was held in my school's hall.
The public lecture is about church law. It was scheduled to be started at 9.00. In fact, the lecture was started at 9.30. It was a little late because the people that came to the lecture is still only a few. Eventually it was started with only about twenty participants. The lecture was opened with short foreword and introducing by Lazarus Purwanto.
The lecturer was brought by Prof. Leo J. Koffeman, a professor of church law and ecumenism. He brought his lecture by read all of the paper's content that was also given to each participants. It took about thirty minutes for the lecturer to read the whole paper.
Requirement for an Academic Approach of Church Law. It was the title of the paper. Koffeman gave a brief description about the position of church law in the churches and theological school. It's no wonder that the church law has a little amount of "peminat". (I'm the only one from the undergraduate program that was coming to the lecture.)
I'll go straight to the requirements needed, according Koffeman, so church law deserves a place at the theological faculty. The church law need to be critical in order to fight conservatism; ecumenical in order to fight confessional narrow-mindedness; missionary in order to fight introversion; contextual in order to fight uniformity; juridicial in order to fight legalism. That's the very short summary of Koffeman's paper.
I now will write down some questions and statements that raised by the participants:
Pak Kadarmanto:
conflicts often rooted by the lack of understanding of church law. So, we need more scholars in church law (?); Indonesia churches tend to be legalism; Koffeman's approaches enlightening.
Lia Wetangterah:
"why is there no biblical approach?"
Nurselli:
"saya termasuk orang yang frustrasi terhadap tata gereja"; gereja mencontoh hukum negara
Actually there's still another note that can be added here. Since it's already dark here under the "saung", this note will be added someday. (I guess it will never be added!)
